Ouyen Secondary College

Ouyen Secondary College became involved with the Modified Lawn Mower Program in 2007. The College decided to re-establish its automotive program and needed an innovative and safe program to engage boys in learning.

Ouyen Secondary College - Modified Lawn Mower Program with our two old STX 38's and our three new LT105's

We started our program with great assistance from Chris and Bill from Armstrongs in Finley who supplied two second hand mowers then developed what has turned out to be a fantastic relationship with Briggs and Stratton who regularly donate engines to develop and use.

The students attend a least one JMPA event each year to gain an insight into the varying configurations and participate in a non competitive environment. These excursions remain a talking point amongst the community and students for many weeks

In 2008 Ouyen Secondary College was successful in securing Philanthropic support from the Sidney Myer Foundation which enabled us to purchase three brand new mowers from Armstrongs in Finley. Briggs and Stratton donated several 15.5 HP Intek engines and made suggestions on how to improve overall performance.

The students started by dismantling the engines and giving them a light hone. An in depth porting process, 3 angle valve grind and a quick skim of 60 thou off the head. A small adjustable plate was made up to advance the engine timing and the flywheel was lighted. We had it crack tested then it was put back together.

After a brief run in period on a small engine dyno the students gave it a good workout and documented the results. Very flighty and good torque.
Winning the Interschool Challenge at the Deni Ute Muster. We beat Cottam's crew.
Special thanks to the JMPA ( Gordon, Carl, Doug, Julie, Annette and Lyn) for providing the leadership and direction to instigate this fantastic new sport and to our major sponsors.
